Dos And Don'ts Of Dealing With Plantar Fasciiitis

by Linda Lopez

Are you experiencing a sharp, stabbing pain in the bottom of your foot? Do you spend a lot of the day on your feet, either due to work or exercise? If so, then you could be suffering from a condition known as plantar fasciitis. The only way to know for sure is to see a doctor for an official diagnosis, but in the meantime, there are some things you should know that could help relieve your foot pain and prevent the condition from worsening.

DO Ice and Elevate Frequently

More than likely, if you're suffering from plantar fasciitis, you're not going to be able to drop everything you do and stay off your feet until you're better. However, in the meantime, it's a good idea to try and ice and elevate your feet as often as possible, especially after you've been standing or walking. This may mean bringing an ice pack along to work at the office with you, along with a medicine ball that you can use to prop the affected foot up while you're at your desk.

DO Switch to Low Impact Exercises

If you believe your plantar fasciitis may have been caused by excessive exercise, then of course you'll want to take a break from the high-impact workouts for awhile (this includes heavy cardio, such as running and Zumba). However, having plantar fasciitis doesn't mean you have to put your fitness routine on home altogether, though. Switching to low-impact exercises, such as swimming, yoga, tai chi, or even strength-training can help you get the exercise you want without putting a lot of strain on your foot.

DON'T Wear Flip Flops or Heels

Finally, be careful about the types of shoes you wear as you're recovering from plantar fasciitis. Specifically, you'll want to stay away from shoes that don't offer much support, such as flip flops and sandals. Furthermore, avoid high-heeled shoes that will only cause you further discomfort. Ideally, whenever you're on your feet, you should be wearing supportive athletic shoes that will provide you with the support and shock absorption that you need to prevent further injury.

Dealing with plantar fasciitis is a very uncomfortable situation, and it could take awhile before you're able to resume your regular routines. However, by taking the right steps at home and seeking treatment advice from a doctor like those at places like Camden County Foot & Ankle Center, you can overcome plantar fasciitis and get back to your normal way of life.

Taking Care Of Your Whole Body

Your feet might not seem like an important part of your personal health and wellness routine, but you would be hard-pressed to work out without them. Unfortunately, many people overlook their foot health, only to end up suffering from debilitating bunions and painful ingrown toenails. A few years ago, I ignored a cut on my foot which eventually turned into a full-blown infection. After a near-amputation, I realized that I needed to start focusing on my whole body. I know that if you can start focusing on your foot health, you can avoid troubling conditions so that you can enjoy your life.
